"TONY
FORTE'S 'REALITY' IS
MUSIC"
Frank Maiorano in the ITALIAN TRIBUNE, May 9, 2002: When Big Bob Papale asked his friend Tony Forte, "what are you writing next?" the multi-talented performer said, "I think i'll write about the difficulty of romance and not just about the 'hearts and flowers'". "That's the reality of it!" responded Papale; hence the newest collection of songs by Tony Forte is called "Reality". With the help of Bruce Gatewood who mastered the CD and played a variety of instruments, and longtime associate Alfred Marcelli on keyboards, Forte's guitar playing and songwriting skills appear. Born in Newark, NJ and raised in the Silver Lake section of Belleville, Anthony Joseph Forte began attracting attention with a Rock & Roll group he formed called the Hounds. A favorite at the famous New York City rock club CBGB's, Tony Forte and the Hounds played on the same bill with Deborah Harry of Blondie. "Her group was called 'Stilletto' then, and once she asked if she could borrow our equipment and i said, 'Sure, anytime!', " Forte recalls fondly. With his music having a Southern influence, Tony Forte takes great pride in the fact that the legendary Chicago blues singer Slim Harpo recorded his song, "Big Black Car", one of his many experiences he articulates in his weekly commentary, "RIFFS" [now "Dawg Tags"] on the internet. He also has a B.A. in English and has written numerous articles on a variety of topics, making Forte a fascinating guest on several live appearances on WBAI radio in New York City. It seems with the many ebbs and flows of Tony Forte's career there comes the prospect that his latest project, "Dear Benjamin," -a modern musical comedy set in Manhattan- will showcase his genius. He is currently shopping the musical to well-known names in the business. I'd like to add an Oscar Wilde line to Frank Maiorano's really nice review: "It is better to have a permanent income than to be fascinating". Anyhow, since the" Reality" CD and the show i'm well into a new collection of tunes, many of which are influenced by various South American styles- songs with names like "Uma Brisa do Mar"," Luna Llena", and "Aguas Passadas". There's also the usual amount of solo dates as well as gigs with this really wonderfully eclectic band we put together- the ZEN 'GATORS - for which i sing, play, and write. (also featured: John Surrell- drums; Mike (a.k.a. Zike) & Alex Zadoroznyj guitar and bass respectively). ciao for now!
